Passports and Cruises

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

From the US, if you go on a closed-loop cruise to; Alaska, Bahamas, Bermuda, Caribbean, Canada & New England, Hawaii, and Mexico, the short answer is no.

What is a closed-loop cruise?

Sailings out of US ports where the ship begins and ends its voyage at the same port.

What do I need as proof of citizenship?

You can board showing an official government birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where he or she was born), AND for those over 16 years of age, a government issued laminated photo ID.

So, I don't have to have a passport?

You don't have to, but you should. Let me explain why.

Should you miss the ship, or an emergency of any sort has you needing to fly back home unexpectedly, a passport would alleviate any headaches of trying to get back into the US.

Also, there are some islands that require you to have a passport to enter their country, meaning the cruise line will require you to have it to board even though it's not a US requirement.

Laws governing international travel can be complicated, and can change! The best way to ensure a stress-free trip is to contact your cruise line or travel agent well before your departure date for details.

I've heard of the EDL, but not sure what it does.

The EDL, Enhanced Driver's License allows you to re-enter the U.S. from Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The EDL is only accepted at land and sea border crossings, not for air travel. The EDL is less expensive than obtaining a passport, but you won't be able to fly home in the event of an emergency with an EDL.

In closing, a passport is not needed for a closed-loop sailing, however it is highly advisable.

For more information on obtaining passports, contact me via email. I'll send you a link and a code to see if you qualify for 40% off the cost, and you'll receive no charges from me for my services.
